Cut Flower Care and Tips

Thank you for choosing a Rooted In Gallatin Bouquet!

Your locally grown bouquet is filled with all sort of blooms. Some flowers will last longer than others. Although Dahlias are my favorite they tend to wilt the fastest. It takes a lot of moisture to keep all those petals looking fresh but with a little love and care your bouquet can last up to 7-10 days.

Must Dos:

  • Keep away from fruit especially bananas and avocados. The ethylene gas they emit with age your flowers.
  • Place your flowers away from windows that have hot direct light.

Helps a Lot:

  • Choose a clean vase for your arrangement.
  • Keeping your water fresh will help extend the life of your flowers. If the water looks murky or "dirty" give it a quick change. Every 2-3 days is a good rule.
  • Cutting the tips of your flowers will help the flower take up water. If you trim your stems, make sure to remove any leaves that sit below the water line.
  • Using a little flower food. If you bouquet came with a flower food packet, use a little at each water change. You don't need a whole packet every water change.
  • Remove wilting stems.

Tricks of the Trade:

  • Some flowers are called "dirty" flowers like sunflowers. Gorgeous they are they release a sap that can cause the water to become murky faster. You might need to change the water every 1-2 days.
  • Sometime you can save "dehydrating" flower like dahlias and hydrangas with a cold water dip, fresh cut and a hot water stem sear.
